Teens and Photoshop*

Hello again. We’re back with another topic that hits our Venn diagram sweet spot of photography and science. While it might come as no surprise, manipulated images have a negative effect on body image - there are data to prove it.

Just in case you don’t want to read the whole paper, in essence: teens preferred manipulated images of peers (and the manipulations were not extensive…), but “exposure to manipulated Instagram photos directly led to lower body image“. Considering the number of selfies many teens take (and share), this is having a significant impact on mental health.

Exposure to manipulated Instagram photos directly led to lower body image

Which leaves us, as photographers, in a minor quandary. On one hand, we take photographs, we process them, and we only show off our favourites. On the other hand, our portrait work doesn’t involve insane use of Photoshop to create an unachievable and unrealistic body shape (see here and here).

(We’ve actually talked about self-esteem and photography, for younger children, before)

So what can we do about this? Using the approach of do no harm, we can promise the following for all of our teen (or child or parent!) subjects:

  • We will not digitally alter the shape of your face or body

  • Our retouching may be used to remove temporary blemishes, but no more (if a spot will be gone in two weeks, you probably don’t want it recorded for time immemorial in your photograph…)

  • More importantly, our sessions are designed to be a positive experience: relaxed, empowering and fun. The goal is to enjoy the session; the photographs are a record of the time you spent enjoying (really!) having your picture taken, to remember and enjoy for years to come

If you have - or know - a teen who wants or needs an opportunity to shine, get in touch with us. We can make it happen.

This summer, we're focusing on the teen and running a limited promotion. Click on the button below to see what we are currently offering...
