Although we’re coming towards the end of the summer as we write (and, hopefully, the last of the heatwaves have passed), we thought we’d come back to an evergreen topic for family photography…
It’s the most common question we receive: what should we wear? (In this case, on summer location shoots. For our colder weather clothing tips, go here.)
First and foremost, dress for the weather. Clothes you are comfortable in. Clothes that suit the temperature. Shorts, T-shirts, summer dresses. That’s the basics; let’s build from that.
Assuming there’s more than one person in your family, it’s a good idea to wear clothes that don’t clash. It’s not a case of coordinating - there’s no need for everyone to wear a white T shirt and jeans (unless you want something with that look). It’s just a good idea not to have one person in brightly coloured stripes, another in clashing floral colours and another in a football shirt.
Finally, bring summer-appropriate ‘props’: hats, sunglasses, parasols, inflatable pool flamingos. (Well, maybe not the last one…) All of these can be used to add some variety for the session. More importantly, they can provide some shade - harsh sunlight isn’t the most flattering!
As a bonus, the warmer weather means you can even bring a change of clothing (for younger kids - assuming you are happy to change them behind a tree! Of course, if you want to do an al fresco change, we’re not judging. And you can always bring a light jacket to give a different look).
Most importantly, be yourselves. In the end, if you are comfortable and confident in your clothes, we’ll get great images. Throw out the rules above and do what you want.
